Specialized Equipment

CUSA - (Ultrasonic Aspirator) The CUSA will further our ability to provide state-of-the-art surgical care for our patents. It uses ultrasonic technology to fragment, emulsify, and aspirate soft tissue and bone, limiting trauma to the surrounding tissue and vascular supply. The ultrasonic aspirator is extremely beneficial in Neurosurgery where it has been scientifically proven to remove tumor tissue more completely, thereby prolonging tumor recurrence and increasing survival time.

Anne Katherman, DVM, MS, DACVIM
 (Neurology/Neurosurgery)

Dr. Anne Elizabeth Katherman is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Medicine, Specialty of Neurology. She earned her veterinary degree from Ohio State University and her Master’s degree in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Minnesota. Dr. Katherman did a one year internship at the University of Minnesota followed by a three year residency in neurology and neurosurgery at Purdue and Auburn University Colleges of Veterinary Medicine. After completing her residency, Dr. Katherman held the position of assistant professor at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine. In 1992, Dr. Katherman established her own veterinary neurology and neurosurgery referral practice in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Dr. Katherman has lectured on neurology and neurosurgery nationally and internationally. She is also currently working on the VIN team. She has a special interest in surgical treatment of spinal cord neoplasia, surgical and medical management of brain tumors, surgical and medical management of hydrocephalus, surgical management of atlanto-axial subluxation, cervical intervertebral disc surgery, emergency and long term management of seizure disorders, and electrodiagnostics (EMG/NCV/F wave/BAER). 

Dr. Katherman has published a number of articles in the field of veterinary neurology and neurosurgery and has given numerous short courses and audio visual presentations throughout Virginia. Dr. Katherman has a son and daughter-in-law who reside in Manchester, Maryland and is happy to be closer to them. In her free time she enjoys fly fishing, gardening, bird watching, reading and impressionist art.
